We are seven days away from the 50th anniversary of UNIV CONGRESS. We present this year’s president, Usochi Ilozumba, and Alison Birkett, the first president of the congress in the 70s when UNIV CONGRESS was defined as a university congress. On this anniversary of UNIV, she is our honorary president, and now we have the opportunity to share her memories and points of view.
Usochi Ilozumba is industrial chemist by profession. Currently completing her studies, specializing in Philosophical Ethics and Anthropology at the Pontifical University of Santa Croce in Rome.
Her interests are social and political ethics, education and development of women and girls, human dignity and promotion projects.
Alison Birkett graduated in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford in 1969. She taught modern and ancient languages at a high school in London. Soon she moved to Rome, where she worked with St. Josemaría to promote the work of Opus Dei with young people of the five continents. The UNIV Congress, which facilitated young people from all over the world to share ideas on different topics, was key to this.
After 11 years in Rome, she returned to London where she continued directing projects for young people through the Dawliffe Hall Educational Foundation, such as Ashwell House, Hall Residence.
The real reason why Alison is here is because in 1968, while studying at the University of Oxford, she attended the first UNIV and later became the first UNIV president.
